Attendance - Every Day Matters!

It all starts with attendance! Attending school regularly is crucial for your child's education. When a child misses a day, they miss out on learning something that will be important and will need to understand more difficult material later.

If a student is absent for 10% or more of enrolled school days, this is considered chronic absence. This includes excused and unexcused absences, as well as out-of-school suspensions. In a typical school year, chronic absence would be missing 18 days, which is approximately two days per month. Chronically absent students tend to have lower academic, behavioral, and social outcomes.

Attendance - DeSoto's Data

2024-2025 School Year: 72% of students PK-5th grade had adequate (90-94%), good (95-99%), or perfect (100%) attendance rates

Our GOAL: By the end of the 2025–2026 school year, DeSoto will increase student attendance so that at least 85% of students are not classified as chronically absent.

Criteria: Student must attend 90% or more of enrolled school days.

DeSoto's House System

All students are assigned to a house that embodies the character traits that we want to see in our DeSoto Dragons. These four houses make up our school family.

Our houses are Ember (red), Ryuu (green), Drago (black), and Talon (blue). Students returning to DeSoto will keep their house color from last year. All new students will have the opportunity to be assigned their house!

As students individually earn PBIS points for classroom incentives/rewards and monthly school-wide events, the Houses are also monitored for a quarterly winning House. The winning House has an outdoor celebration with snacks, snow cones, games, and playground/recess time.

Students also attend morning House meetings every other month with their other peer and staff House members. These meetings foster the core traits and characteristics of each House and focus on their alignment to our school-wide expectations.

7 Mindsets

This year, students will continue learning about the 7 mindsets. The 7 Mindsets program helps students develop the attitudes and perspectives needed for success and fulfillment. Based on decades of research into the habits of happy, accomplished people, it offers a proven path for academic achievement, strong relationships, and resilience.

7 Mindsets

The 7 mindsets are:

  1. Everything is Possible

  2. Passion First

  3. We are Connected

  4. 100% Accountable

  5. Attitude of Gratitude

  6. Live to Give

  7. Time is Now

At the end of instruction for a mindset, a student from each homeroom who personifies the traits associated the most is named Terrific Kid. A Terrific Kid celebration is held in the morning with donuts and a certificate.

Instruction on the 7 mindsets occurs during our daily morning meeting time (7:40 – 7:50 am). It is imperative for students to be at school and eating their breakfast as early as possible during our student arrival time (7:10 – 7:40 am). This allows them to navigate our campus for breakfast pick up and arrive to class to begin morning procedures while eating breakfast.

7:10-7:40 am is also often a time where students can catch up on missed work, have independent work time, conference with a teacher, or work with a peer.
